As someone who works in the news and also a member of the “millennial generation,” I’m so sick of seeing articles about how we don’t know who we are.
I’m sorry, but who the fuck knows who they are in their 20s? I know I don’t. At the same time, I’m eager to learn and I can’t wait to move to the next step in my life. Yeah, it’s not easy. Yeah, it’s often times too difficult. But at the same time, it’s these challenges that shape us.
Yep. Damn straight I don’t know who I am or “what I want to be when I grow up.” I fit the stereotype - I’m over my head in debt, I’ve moved home after school, and work two part time jobs up the ass to pay my bills. I’m still trying to find my career path. But FUCK am I sick about reading the same shit over and over again. And good lord, I know my politics. I know I’m a blatant liberal who understands both sides of the coin - but don’t you dare summarize my political views in a think-piece article just for clicks on your website. Fuck you. You don’t know shit - welp, there’s the ignorant, arrogant stereotype of a millennial again, but guess what? It’s justified.
Look back to each generation before: they did the same thing, just in a different context because of the times and current events. Vietnam, WWII, the Great Depression. Just take a gander, it’s all the same. It’s called growing up.
Stop shitting on this generation, stop shitting on the previous generations, and stop shitting on the newer generations before they even have a chance to make a name for themselves. Yeah, life is a skeptical place. We’re all skeptics because we’ve seen the evils of mankind. Who, or even better, what, are we if we don’t try to right that? Recognizing these issues are the first act toward solution. Stop pointing the finger at one another for our fucking problems and let’s make a difference instead of complaining, sitting on our asses, and writing nonsense “think” pieces about the differences between our age.
We all have the innate ability to make a positive impact in our short ass lives. Take advantage of that shit and get crackin’. Time is precious. Leave a positive mark on the world we live in. Smile a bit, take in the sun’s rays when you can, and spread that goodness to others.
Life is literally too short. Fuck around, enjoy it, but leave an impact worth writing home about.
And I’m perusing journalismjobs.com. What the fuck is my life?
Go to bed, Derek. Go to bed.
